Mass carnage in ancient Rome: almost two thousand bodies have been accidentally unearthed in a catacomb deep below ground. In a scene of mystery, splendour and horror, the bodies are piled high in a series of secret chambers. The rooms are elaborately decorated, the bodies richly adorned, some even mummified. Was this the first mass Christian suicide cult? A terrible disaster? A plague? Or murder most foul, and if so by whom? Is this a scene of ancient carnage or a carnival of death?
